We keep a few of animal species at our farm in Zajezd near Bustehrad, Czech Republic. We have a small zoopark, which is open to public, see http://www.zoopark-zajezd.cz/

Ferret (Mustela putorius furo)

We have been keeping ferrets since 2000, our breeding stock came from the U.S.A., Denmark and from Czech breeders. We keep them in aviaries and we bring them home. We feed the kittens and take into hand at the time when they are still with their mothers, they get good quality food, they are friendly to people. We train them to get used to stay in home and to keep clean.

Current offer of babies on sale

Veterinary care, feeding

Our breeding stock is vaccinated by the vaccines Rabisin and Eurican DHPPI2, the ferrets are under regular veterinary care, free from Coccidiosis. The kittens on sale have got microchips, EU passports, they get vaccinated against Rabies after their 12th week of age (by the vaccine Rabisin). If required, we can let them to be vaccinated against Distemper (by the vaccine Eurican DHPPI2).

There are various points of view to the way of feeding ferrets, from the exclusive use of pelleted food, to the exclusive natural food. We combine both, pelleted food for cats soaked in water (we do not use the ferret food due to the price), with minced meat of chicken, horse and beef, with addition of eggs and cottage cheese, vitamine and mineral supplements, sometimes mice and one-day chicken. If the meet is low-fat, we add the fat of chicken, beef or mutton, or pork lard. It is highly not recommended to feed raw meat or fat of pork, due to the risk of Aujezsky disease, but cooked one does not harm.

Angora ferrets

We breed angora ferrets and ferrets with normal hair, some of them have longer hair (sometimes called half-angora or semi-angora), in various colours and patterns. Angora ferret has long hair, but the undercoat is missing, therefore it is susceptible to get chilled. The different shape of nose is characteristic for angora ferret.

I cannot accept the statement that angora ferrets do not survive the 3 years of age. We keep a pastel angora male born in 2003 i.e. five years old, he became again father in this year, he has 10 babies with two females

It is true though that angoras are more delicate and prone to health problems. The angora kittens may  be weaker and grow slowly.
The females have a lactation problem, although interested to take care for their babies. Therefore, it is necessary to pass the babies of an angora ferret to a foster.

Colour patterns, white markings

The names and descriptions said below are not mandatory nor unified, they have been inspired by various sources.

  • Dark-Eyed White is purely white, the eyes are burgundy which is different from albino.
  • Dark-Eyed White with pattern (DEW with pattern) has up to 10% of guard hair of a colour (e.g. sable, pastel etc.). If the coloured guard hair are dispersed, it is called light silver. If the coloured guard hair are concentrated in tail or they also make a stripe on the back, it is called ermine.
  • Panda(or, American panda) has white head, bib and "socks". In case of panda chocolate or pastel, the white colour can be replaced by light creamy.
  • Blaze(badger) has white stripe on head.
  • Mitt has white bib and socks (sometimes only the toe tips are white). Harlequin has white bib and socks, like mitt, and it has also white patches at various parts of its body, e.g. on head  or at belly. A ferret can have just a white bib and no other markings.
  • On the other hand, mutt has dark spots on light base, e.g. at belly or irregular white patches e.g. at legs or on tail . Panda mutt and blaze mutt have darker patches on head (usually symetric), and ermine mutt has a row of white and dark spots instead of continuous dark stripe.
  • Roan has mixed dark and light guard hair ("pepper and salt"). In case of combination of white with sable or black, it is called dark silver or silver.
Ferrets have various concentration of colour: standard has the points slightly darker than body, solid has the same concentration all over the body, apart from mask, siamese has rather darker points comparing to body, the concentration point has this difference between points and body even more remarkable (but in some terminologies, siamese and point mean the same).

Saddle-back has a darker "saddle" on its back, and the head is lighter. The legs can be darker than body (in such a case, the toes use to be lighter). If the dark colour is concentrated into saddle and tail, then the further step is the dark stripe only (DEW with pattern/ermine). The head can be so much light that the ferret resembles to panda, but in case of saddle-back  the change of colour from head to body is continuous, while panda, shall have a clear collar. Sometimes it is not easy to determine whether a pastel kitten is a saddle-back ferret or panda. If all the toes are coloured, it should be not a panda which uses to have white socks.

There are a few types of masks: full mask, bandit shape, "V" shape, no mask i.e. all the face is uniformly light, and other shapes.

Colours

We breed ferrets in the colours: albino, dark-eyed white , champagne,  pastel, cinnamon, chocolate, sable, dark sable.

The colour is determined according to the darkest part of the ferret's hair, therefore the overall appearance may be lighter, than the set colour. E.g chocolate roan, chocolate point or cinnamon saddle-back look like pastel or champagne. Pastel point can look nearly as white, although it has nothing to do with DEW.
The colour hue is changing by the year season, the same ferret can look different in summer, and in winter .

There is not a unified terminology, with regards to pastel, champagne, creamy, sandy, apricot. Here, I will call "champagne" the tan colour (diluted cinnamon), it uses to have burgundy eyes , and "pastel" to be the colour light chocolate with brown eyes. The difference of cinnamon from chocolate is in its reddish hue.
It is hard to determine the future colour hue at babies, therefore for simplicity, we call as pastel all the beige, creamy hues, and dark pastel all the light to medium brown and grayish brown.
